Summer in the Hunter Valley is characterised by hot temperatures, clear skies, and long, sunny days. The vines in Summer are if full bloom. So if you want photos surrounded by lush thick vines then Summer is the perfect time.

Summer is without doubt the most challenging season to get married in. And people don’t realise how hot it actually gets here. If you are planning a Summer wedding in the Hunter Valley, plan for a day that will be at least 30°C. But don’t be surprised if it goes to the high 30’s or even 40. Here are some tips to get you through:

• Dress appropriately for a hot Summer Hunter Valley wedding. This means don’t wear a three-piece suit or have a massive dress with ten layers. You will melt.
• If you are having an outdoor ceremony, choose one that offers some shade. The shade of a tree works well. Provide parasols and water for your guests to protect them from the sun and keep them hydrated.
• Have your ceremony much later in the day. A 2 pm or 3 pm ceremony is pretty early for a Summer wedding. A 4 pm or later ceremony will be slightly cooler and you still have four hours of light before the sun sets.
• If you are having your ceremony in a chapel, try to choose one with air conditioning or one that is open aired.
• Choose a venue that has air conditioning or an open-air option. Night can also stay very hot and humid.
• Schedule time for sunset photos. The sunset times vary, but it can set at 8pm or later. The light in Summer is very harsh, but by doing some photos at sunset means it will be cooler for you and the light will be much better. Give yourself the best chance of getting beautiful photos of the two of you.

Autumn is, however, peak wedding season. I would say that Autumn for weddings, is actually busier than Spring. March is always crazy and then everyone wants to get married in April during the school holidays. So once again that means that the good wedding venues and popular wedding vendors will book out more than a year in advance. So plan accordingly.

Winter Weddings in the Hunter Valley

June, July and August

Winter in the Hunter Valley is characterised by cool temperatures and clear skies. It is becoming a really popular time of year to get married in. Unlike other areas of NSW, the Hunter Valley has temperatures that are mild but not freezing. And it is the season with the least amount of rainfall.

The best thing about Winter, from a wedding photographer’s point of view, is that the light is amazing! Winter also has the best light of the year. The sun remains low in the sky and due to the temperate, the sunsets are more dynamic and the light is softer and more golden. An average, ordinary sunset in Winter is better than the best sunset in Summer.

One thing worth noting is that the vines in the Hunter Valley are just sticks during Winter. So if you wanted beautiful vineyard photos in the vines, you will be disappointed in Winter. A great place for wedding photos in Winter is the Hunter Valley Gardens. Definitely worth checking out if you are getting married at a vineyard property in Winter.
